Spiritan Ministry in China

China is estimated to have between 10 and 15 million Catholics, approximately one percent of the country’s population. The history of Catholicism in China is long and complicated. As with any culture, successful evangelization must incorporate and embrace cultural differences. Missionaries must strike a delicate balance so as not to exacerbate tensions between the Church and the Chinese government.

In 2014, the General Council of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit confirmed its decision to explore the possibility of a Spiritan presence in China. Occasional pastoral activities had been undertaken in the San Dong Province since 2011, and after dialogue with the Administrator of the Diocese of Yi Du about the  ministry of the Spiritans there, more specific forms of ministry were initiated in 2016. Read More.

Vatican II was convened by Pope John XXIII and was tasked with making the historical teachings of theChurch clear to a modern world, on topics including the nature of the church, the mission of the laity and religious freedom.
