The Passing of Fr. Michael Doyle, C.S.Sp.

Father Micheal Doyle of the Spiritan Province of TransCanada died peacefully on the afternoon of July 16th, 2015. At the time Father Michael was a resident of the Houses of Providence, Scarborough where he had resided since April of 2014. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Ann Boland of Ireland. Father Michael is survived by his sisters, Olivia O’Meara and Oonagh Brennan of Ireland, as well as, Mary Kelly of Australia and numerous nieces and nephews.

Father Michael was born December 18, 1932 in Cork City, Ireland. He made his first profession as a Spiritan on September 8, 1950 and was ordained to the priesthood on July 12, 1959. During his 56 years as a priest he served in a variety of teaching, administrative and pastoral works in Canada, Papua New Guinea, Italy and Australia.

First assigned to Neil McNeil High School in Toronto in 1960, Father Michael became school principal in 1965. From 1968 to 1971 Father Michael served as Director of Student Services at Toronto’s Centennial College. In 1972 Father Michael became the Superior of the Spiritan District of Ontario and later became the first Provincial Superior of the newly founded Spiritan Province of TransCanada. Father Doyle left from that position to take up pastoral work in Papua New Guinea, a service that was interrupted by a call to serve from 1986-1992 as First Assistant to the Spiritan Superior General in Rome.

Returning to Canada in 1993, Father Michael served as the Associate Pastor of St Joseph’s Parish in Scarborough before returning to serve once again in Aitape and Wewak, Papua New Guinea and later in Australia.

In 1998 Father Michael returned to Canada once again and took up pastoral work at St. Joseph’s Parish in Scarborough until 2001 when he became the Director of Vocation Ministry for the Spiritans in Canada. In 2008 Father Doyle retired to the Laval Community in Toronto and as his fight with Alzheimer’s disease became more challenging, he moved to La Salle Manor and then the Houses of Providence where he lived out the remainder of his days.

Father Michael was known for his love of education and his work in the missions. Father Michael made many great friends during his lifetime, many of whom remained so loyal to him in his later years. He will be missed by his Spiritan confreres, family and friends.

Visitation – Thursday July 23rd, 2015, 7:00 – 9:00 PM (with Vigil prayer service at 8:00 PM) at O’Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. E., Scarborough, ON, M1R 2Y8.
Funeral Mass – Friday July 24th, 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, 200 Morrish Road, Scarborough, ON, M1C 1E8. The Mass will be followed by a light reception in the church hall.
Burial will follow at 2:30 PM at Holy Cross Cemetery, 8361 Yonge St., Toronto, ON, L3T 2C7 at 2:30 PM.
