We're not bringing God to a people. The Spirit proceeds us. In this installment of the Spiritan Journeys, Fr. Bill Christy, C.S.Sp., describes what it's like to be a Spiritan Missionary, finding that all people know God because the Spirit has breathed on all of creation.
Transcript: What has surprised me in being a Spiritan is that what we learned as part of our Spiritan Missionary Method is that we're not bringing God to a people. That the Holy Spirit has dwelled and breathed into all of creation and every peoples around the world, whether they're Christian or not Christian, they know God. They know God because the Spirit has preceded us.
In my time as a Spiritan, I've worked in first evangelization with the Maasai in Tanzania and I've worked with the Aborigines in Western Australia. And truly in their culture in their their own concept of who God is and how God is calling them. You can see that the Holy Spirit has been present to them. And in learning about the culture, learning the language, learning the the ways that God has already spoken to them, we can amplify that and bring the Full Gospel the full good news to people who have just barely heard it.
