Maxwell Turnwald, a member of Scouting BSA Troop 228, planned and executed his Eagle Scout project on May 4 and 11, 2019, with the help of about 35 friends, family, and scouts.
The project organized the construction of a statue base for the St. Joseph statue at the Spiritan Center in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. In addition, the statue was cleaned and stripped of the old paint and repainted along with the two smaller statues inside the courtyard.
The courtyard was weeded, bushes trimmed, and the walls were power washed.
Maxwell is a senior at Upper St. Clair High school, a member of the Ultimate Frisbee team, a percussionist in the marching band, and a member of the speech and debate team. He is a confirmed Roman Catholic at St. Louise de Marillac in USC where his family attends mass.
Maxwell will be attending college in the fall of 2020 but the school and major are still unknown.
Volunteering beyond his own project, Maxwell has helped with three other Eagle Scout projects on the grounds of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit and dozens of service projects through the scouts.
Mrs. Nestler, an adult leader of 228 and a bookkeeper at the center, provides the connection between the scouts and the organization which has allowed for several 228 projects to be done on the ground, including Maxwell’s.
The satisfaction of providing a service for the Spiritan Center will remain with Maxwell, and although he will never do another Eagle Project, the experience gained will positively affect how he views and interacts with the world.
