In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus had to tell the people that He was the bread sent by God. The crowd questioned how Jesus could say He came down from heaven when they knew He was the Son of Mary and Joseph. Jesus wanted the people to know that God wanted to be so close to them and sent his Son to nourish us on our journey toward eternal life.
Jesus, the bread given for the life of the world, unites us with Him as He is one with God. As the psalmist beautifully puts it, “taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” In the Eucharist, we live as people of the promise, confident in God's unwavering faithfulness. This assurance in God's faithfulness through our faith, continually shapes us, drawing us closer to Him and to each other in this shared journey of faith.
Patience, a virtue that allows God’s will to unfold in our lives, is key. We must all strive to remove the obstacles that hinder our spiritual vision, to see Jesus more clearly. He nourishes us and directs us to His father, who is abundant in mercy and love. God will guide us through every situation we face. He is the sustenance for our souls, leading us to eternal life, and we can find peace in our faith journey.
Through our communion with the Lord, we gain a deep, spiritual union with Christ. Despite our sin, violence, or oppression, we shall be sustained to rise above our human condition. Jesus is nourishment for the life of the world.
