In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to reflect on our call to be his disciples. Seeking God’s wisdom and relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, we respond to Jesus’ call through faith.
Jesus explains to the crowd that there is no easy way to become one of his disciples. On this journey of discipleship, we must make sacrifices. Many obstacles will come your way, but you must remain committed to being his disciple.
This journey towards discipleship began at our baptism. As we mature in faith, we begin to examine the requirements of discipleship. This journey will not be easy. When we think about it, we’re further along this journey than when we first started.
An African American hymn says, “Nobody told me that the road would be easy but I don’t believe that God has brought me this far to leave me now.” These words remind us that God is still working with us and has not abandoned us on this journey to follow him. We are God’s beloved.
Carrying our Cross, making mistakes, and following Jesus step by step and day by day, we will follow the Lord. No matter what, God wants us to survive. This journey of discipleship is a lifelong process. There will be struggles but there will also be joyful moments.
