Saint Peter proclaims Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do people say that he is?" Puzzled by the question, they responded with various answers. When he asked them, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter's answer captures the disciples' attention.
The understanding of a Messiah for many was a revolutionary figure. However, Jesus was much less than revolutionary. He was gentle, loving, and kind. Yet, Peter's proclamation that Jesus is the Messiah did not match many of the disciple's expectations.
God's way is not the way of humans. Jesus wanted people to put their faith in God's actions. Jesus taught that we become one with God as we express our faith by taking up our crosses daily. Suffering can be a part of our journey with God.
God walks alongside us in all our troubles. This was not the image of the Messiah many were expecting. They wanted a Messiah who would change structures and systems. They were not looking for a gentle, suffering Messiah. Jesus was showing us how to live out our faith in everyday life in a new way.
