Jesus’ disciples argued about who would be first in God’s kingdom. He reminded them that the one who is a servant of all will be considered the first. Discipleship is about service, not status or honor.
Jesus says that he would suffer, die, and experience resurrection as part of his mission. This is the transformative cost of discipleship. He reminds them that selfish ambitions are the root of their conflict. Discipleship will transform their understanding of greatness from power and status in the community to the service of others.
As we serve others and our families, we share in spiritual greatness. However, our ambitions, priorities, infighting, gossip, indifference, hatred, and jealousy can hinder our authentic service to God’s people. Jesus, in his inclusive invitation, invites all people to share in salvation. Do we expect a reward for our service to God’s people?
The message of the Gospel today is clear and reassuring: we must focus on something other than ourselves to be great in God’s kingdom. An African-American hymn says, “What a blessing to be here in the service of the Lord.” When serving others rather than seeking to be served, we model the way Christ served.
