This Sunday’s Gospel affirms that there is healing power in the name of Jesus. This gift is shared with all believers from the greatest to the least. Jesus’ disciples in this gospel thought that the healing power in Jesus name is reserved exclusively for them. They did not want to share this power with others.
When Jesus’ disciples saw someone who was not in their group healing in Jesus’ name, they became angry and jealous. They began to complain. Jesus reminded them and us that whoever is not against him is for him. I have heard a lot of people say, if everyone has the power to heal in Jesus’ name then who is the greatest?
Again, the greatest is the one who serves those in need. We are all in need of healing. It is through faith that our healing is made evident. Jesus sends each of us as instrument of healing to others. We are called to encourage others and not to become a stumbling block for those who are doing what is right.
Humility is at the heart of discipleship. We must recognize that we are blessed in order to be a blessing to others. We must welcome the gifts that God has given to all people. Christianity is not a private club. Jesus teaches us that we all must encourage faith in those who seek healing in the name of Jesus.
