This Sunday’s gospel calls us to reflect on the meaning of dining with the Lord. When Jesus met Zacchaeus on the road, he invited himself into his house. How do we welcome the Lord into our home?
Jesus is always searching for us. Sometimes, it is the “crowds” and the noise of the world that prevent us from seeing the Lord. This was the situation for Zacchaeus who had to climb a tree to catch sight of Jesus who was passing by. This gesture must have made Jesus notice Zacchaeus even more.
In front of all the people, Jesus spoke to Zacchaeus, who was a tax collector, considered a sinner, and probably not the most liked in the community. Jesus invited himself into his house and ate with him. Zacchaeus hurried down immediately to meet Jesus. Upon welcoming the Lord into his house, Zacchaeus had a conversion moment and was probably never the same person.
Some people say that because of his height, Zacchaeus climbed the tree. However, in the presence of Jesus, we are all short, fall short, and are short-sighted. Nevertheless, the Lord seeks us out. Now that Jesus is in our home, we are to receive the Lord as our welcomed guest. Every encounter we have with Jesus leads us to conversion and repentance. Each of us is invited to supper with the Lord.
We know that dining with family and friends is not only a sign of hospitality but also shows us a mutual bond or connection. Jesus is not ashamed to dine with us. All of us, saints, sinners, greatest, and least have the opportunity of serving the Lord as we risk seeking him out. Humility is essential. We can all change. Through Jesus Christ, salvation comes to our house.
