In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that no matter what we are experiencing in our lives, we are blessed in the eyes of God. The Beatitudes in the scriptures give us a framework for Christian living. We must rejoice and be glad for God comes to save us.
As Christians, we are called to focus on the Kingdom of God. The poor in spirit, the meek and mild, the peacemakers, those who mourn, and those who long for justice and peace will be gathered and called “blessed” in God’s kingdom.
Being called blessed doesn’t mean that we will have a comfortable life. It doesn’t mean that we will have everything we want. In fact, it means we may have to struggle but we will not struggle alone. God is always in our midst. Jesus invites us to see blessings even in our struggles, sufferings, and pains. When these things occur we must not be afraid. The beatitudes call us to look differently at what it means to be “blessed.”
God’s grace is always active in our lives. No matter what we are going through, no matter our circumstances, God looks beyond our faults and sees what we need. Blessed, broken, and shared, God, comes to take the broken pieces of our lives and make us whole again. On our faith journey, we are all traveling on the avenues of grace hearing Jesus calling us “blessed.”
