In this Sunday’s Gospel, A rich man asks Jesus “what must I do to have eternal life. Jesus reminds us that Eternal life in the kingdom of God is worth more than all our earthly possessions. The importance that we sometimes put on our possessions make it harder for us to let them go.
Today’s Scriptures invites us to seek wisdom about the priority we put on the things that we treasure. “I prayed, and understanding was given me; I beg the Lord, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.”
Going through this Coronavirus pandemic has taught us many things. The one thing that stands out is what we have been taught about paying attention to the things that matters the most. Staying connected with God, family, friends, those in need and our health are what matters.
While having material goods is not bad, the importance we sometimes put on them above the things that matters the most don’t always make us happy. Our focus must be on trusting in God and his call in our lives. Eternal life is our greatest gift.
Jesus says: ‘seek you first the kingdom of heaven and all other things shall be added unto it’ (Matt. 6:33). Our image of the kingdom of God expands when we reach out to those whom society thinks should be excluded. A friend of mine often reminds me, “Jesus says a simple life lived for others is all it takes to exist in God’s loving embrace.” This is what we must do to have eternal life.
