The Congregation of the Holy Spirit United States Province will hold its Provincial Chapter from June 18-22, 2018 at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This week-long meeting is convened every six years – alternating every three years with Provincial Assemblies – for the purpose of prayerful reflection on the work and direction of the Congregation and election of the leadership team.
“While the Chapter itself lasts one week, members of the Congregation are engaged for nearly a year in preparation for the meeting,” says Fr. Jeffrey Duaime, C.S.Sp., currently serving as Provincial. “A planning committee develops a process to facilitate discussion and engage the entire province in this important moment for reflection within our Congregation.”
As part of an ongoing community renewal process, these meetings also provide an opportunity to discern guidelines for the circumscription and apply directives from the General Chapters.
Members of the U.S. Province including priests and brothers serving domestically and abroad, Spiritans-in-formation, and Lay Spiritans, as well as a number of Provincials from other Spiritan circumscriptions, are expected to attend the event.
The Chapter will commence with prayer on Monday evening. Bishop David Zubik of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh; Fr. John Fogarty, C.S.Sp., Superior General; and the provincial-elect will each take a turn presiding over the daily Eucharist throughout the week. Fr. Donald Nesti,C.S.Sp., former President of Duquesne University, will also receive a special recognition from Duquesne University.
U.S. Province members will prayerfully consider the mission of the Congregation in this important decision-making process as they convene to elect a new provincial, who will serve a three-year term. The newly-elected provincial then selects a Council to work together as a cohesive leadership team.
The provincial-elect will be announced at the conclusion of the chapter and the new leadership team will begin their mandates on August 15, 2018.
