Born on December 12, 1912, in the Netherlands, Father Koren joined the Spiritans in 1931. After three years of studies at their senior seminary, he was sent to Rome in 1935, where he was ordained in 1937. He attended the Gregorian University there till 1940, but World War II caused him to come to the United STates in 1941, where he earned a doctorate in theology at the Catholic University of America in 1942. From 1941 until 1948 he taught at St. Mary's College, Port of Spain, and then received an appointment to Duquesne University as a teacher of philosophy. After becoming head of the Department of Philosophy in 1952, he organized a doctoral program in philosophy with emphasis on contemporary thought. In 1960 the chairmanship of the Department of Theology was added to his functions. He retained both positions until 1966. During this time he had also founded the Duquesne University book series and become general editor of Duquesne University Press, in addition to editing its philosophical and theological books. He remained an editor of the University Press until 1973. He also authored or co-authored a dozen books on philosophy and theology. In 1967 Father Koren when to Florida, where he taught philosophy for nine more years until his retirement from teaching in 1976. He passed away in 2002.
