On this Sunday, Jesus invites us to reflect on the parable of the Mustard Seed. This is a parable about trusting God with faith and patience.
This past year with the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, we had to live by faith and with patience. It is God who allows our faith to grow like the mustard seed. It is with patience that we can see the hand of God at work allowing us to stay connected and see new hope and new dreams become reality in our lives.
Today’s gospel tells us that the kingdom of God “is like a mustard seed. When a mustard seed is planted in the ground it is the smallest of all seeds. We are reminded that when this seed grows it becomes a large tree where birds can make their nests. Sometimes we wonder what God can do with our “little faith?” Planted in the firm soil of Jesus’ words and promises, there is no limit to what God can do in us and through us.
In our hurry to see things happen quickly, we ask God for patience. Trusting in God’s timing is the best way for us to experience the essence of the Kingdom of God. Without God, we can do nothing. Our hope is built on the promises of Christ.
Today’s parable reminds us that God is in control and not us! We don’t make the seed sprout and grow by our efforts, so the coming of the kingdom of God is God’s work. God may not come when we want him but he is always on time. We cannot make God’s kingdom come but we must be open to the kingdom of God already present in our lives.
Jesus is telling us that things may not happen the way we want them but it will happen in God’s time and by God’s grace. All things work together for the good. Wait patiently. God is not finished with us. “We walk by faith and not by sight.”
