Today's Gospel reminds us that each of us like the Apostles must put our faith and trust solely on the grace of God who will supply all our needs. Each of us has a role to play in the struggles for a better world. The word of God is good news amid our daily cares and the challenges we face. The disciples are Jesus’ spokespersons proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is at hand.
Jesus sent his disciples out in pairs. This is to remind us that God’s mission is about bringing us together as a community and offering hope no matter the worries and concerns we carry. Again, this is confirmation that we can not be a Christian or Church by ourselves. We need each other.
Jesus reminds us that the road of faith will not be easy. In some ways, we make this journey a bit more difficult by the things we are carrying. Jesus told his followers not to bring anything with them, not even a money bag or sandals. This is important so that they are not distracted from their mission. They are to carry only Jesus ‘ gift of “peace” and know that the Kingdom of God is at hand.
Sharing in the mission of Jesus is difficult and we are all called to participate in it. This mission has its challenges, its difficulties, and its joys. As we pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest, let us work to have more
hospitality, sharing, communion around the table, and be more welcoming to those who are excluded.
A professor of mine once said, “Proclaiming the Kingdom does not mean teaching truth and doctrine, but bringing people to a new way of living and sharing, a new way of acting and thinking, based on the Good News that Jesus proclaims: God is God of all and therefore we are all brothers and sisters.
