In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that God’s generosity rests upon us. God never gets tired of seeking us. All we must do is to make ourselves available to God.
The parable of the workers and the landowner affirms that God’s way is not the way of humans. God is just, and his generosity, is shared with us all. Whether we are first or last, God shares his generosity with us all.
In today’s Gospel, the landowner hires workers three times during that day. The workers each agreed on their wage. Each worker was given their salary at the end of the day. Some complained that those who hired last should not be paid equal to those who worked the entire day. They were jealous of the owner’s generosity.
Sometimes, we think our work deserves more payment and honor than those who didn’t work as long or hard as we have. My grandmother often said, “When God gets the honor, there is no limit to what we can do.” When seeking entitlement, we can’t understand God’s way of justice and fairness.
Equality and justice are essential in building the kingdom of God. Each of us begins at different places and circumstances. God’s generosity is fair in every situation. As we respond to God’s call, love and generosity are God’s response to us.
