Jesus teaches that those who wish to be great must be servants of all. Service and sacrifice are not just part but the heart of discipleship. Our greatness is in our imitation of Jesus’ service and generosity towards others, a call that should motivate and commit us to our spiritual duties.
Two of Jesus’ disciples came to him with a request. They wanted to sit one at his right and one at his left when he came into his glory. Jesus reminded them that these places had been prepared for others. They were assured that they would share in Jesus’ baptism and suffering. And in this assurance, we find hope and encouragement. Ultimately, Jesus promised they would remain connected to him in sacrifice and service.
Discipleship is about service, not status or honor. It is profound and transformative. Through discipleship will transform our understanding of greatness from power and status in the community to the service of others.
The message of the Gospel today is clear and reassuring. It reminds us to focus on something other than ourselves. Our ambitions, priorities, infighting, gossip, indifference, hatred, and jealousy can hinder our authentic service to God’s people. But in this message, we find comfort and security in our faith, knowing that we are not alone in our struggles. Our community, our fellow disciples, are here to support and guide us, emphasizing the importance of each member and making us feel valued and integral to the faith community.
