The Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Spirit (Spiritan Sisters) was founded on January 6, 1921, on the Feast of Epiphany in Farschwiller in Lorraine, France. The founder of this congregation was Eugenie Caps, who was born in Lorraine in the diocese of Mets.
Sister Eugenie Caps was raised in a Christian family. She always wanted to be a missionary. She discovered the writings of Fr. Francis Libermann and realized that this is the same mission she wanted for her congregation. She wanted her congregation to be specifically missionary.
After World War I, she established a relationship with the Spiritan priests in Lorraine. With the help of the Superior General of the Spiritan priests, Fr. Le Roy, she began her missionary Congregation. The Spiritan sisters were canonically established by Pope Benedict XV with the name, Missionary Sisters of the Holy Spirit under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The Spiritan Sisters have about 290 members in the world who come from 19 countries. The sister work in 16 countries: France, Congo Brazzaville, Martinique, Cameroon, Madagascar, Angola, Guadaloupe, Cape Verte, Gabon, Senegal, Ghana, Haiti, Mozambique, Brazil, Philippines, Nigeria.
March 16 is the anniversary of their founder’s death.
