Uganda is one of several countries where Spiritans minister to refugees who have been forcibly removed from their homes and country of origin. Uganda ranks among the top 5 countries in the world for hosting refugees with some 1.4 million residing in camps within the country’s borders.
Globally, the number of displaced persons exceeds 82.4 million, 35 million of whom are under 18 years old.
One can only imagine what these refugees experience. They have left behind property, material goods, and in some cases, family members.
They have been uprooted from their culture and way of life. There is no certainty as to if or when they may be able to return to their countries of origin. Many suffer from depression as their hope for a better future dwindles.
They have little or no prospects and rely on the host countries' good will, the outreach of non-governmental Agencies (NGO) and help from religious entities such as the Spiritans.
Through his many interactions with the camps’ occupants,
Fr. Festo Adrabo, C.S.Sp. realized the critical need for qualified counselors to engage with refugees to listen to their concerns and fears, as well as to provide meaningful activities to elevate their self-esteem.
With his background in clinical pastoral education, Fr. Festo recruited and trained scores of resident refugees in basic counseling skills training.
