Having arrived at the end of my Pastoral Mission Experience (PME) in Perus, in the urban periphery of São Paulo, Brazil, I have begun to look back at what I did during my time here and what meaning it has for the future.

This Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.  This new beginning is the foundation of our faith.

As we await the great feast of Pentecost, this Sunday’s scriptures remind us to wait united in prayer. Prayer is not a waste of time. The Holy Spirit will bring us the joy and peace that we cannot find in this world.

Fr. Anthony J. (Tony) Gittins, C.S.Sp. of England, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, died peacefully in Manchester, England, surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old.

As we celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter, we also commemorate Mother’s Day in the United States. This day reminds us of the great gift of life that God gives us through our mothers.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus challenges his disciples and us to have courage.  We must not be afraid. On this journey, we must have faith in the words of Jesus.
